The Dodge Ram 3500 - King of Beasts

The truck experts at PickUpTrucks.com don't waste their time on the weak. When it comes to finding the burliest, brawniest best truck out there, nothing is more definitive than the King of Beasts Test Drive.

This 1600-mile Test Drive takes the heavy-haulers to their muscular limits by towing a loaded trailer over the Rockies and back again. This year the King of Beasts showdown was between the 2013 Ford F-450 Lariat Crew Cab 4X4 and the 2013 Ram 3500 Laramie Longhorn Crew Cab 4X4.

Although the experts agreed that both the F-450 and the Ram 3500 performed well, there were noticeable differences. Although the Ford F-450 has been the standard for the best big-beast on the road, it seems the Ram 3500 Laramie Longhorn Crew Cab has now outranked the master of heavy-duty pickups.

The Ford F-450 vs. Ram 3500: Acceleration
The King of Beasts course is no easy feat. The Rockies prove to be a challenge even for the biggest trucks out there. Both performed well, but the 2013 Ram 3500  certainly outperformed its Ford counterpart. The Ram averaged faster speeds, covering 10 miles in 3 minutes faster. It also reached higher top speed of 57.8 vs. 56.3 recorded from the Ford F-450.

The Ford F-450 vs. Ram 3500: Braking
The Braun of a monstrous truck is only beneficial if you have the power to stop the beast. Braking is a consideration that any big-truck driver makes, and again the Ram 3500 came in first.

The Ram 3500 clearly had better stopping power. For the fewest brake touches in one run, the Ram 3500 scored 7, less than half of the F-450's required 18. The brake temperatures at the end of the run were also significantly different: 375 degrees for the Ford-450, 262 degrees for the Ram 3500.

The Ford F-450 vs. Ram 3500: Ride
During the King of Beasts, the Ford F-450 had a stiff ride when fully loaded. At times, the jitters and bucks were noticeable-especially on rough stretches of the road.

The 2013 Ram 3500 did much better with the experts. They stated they rarely felt as if they were towing anything at all. A better overall ride, the Ram 3500 reached higher speeds at the steepest grades, had more control of the load, and kept the passengers more comfortable.

Test Drive a 2013 Ram 3500 Laramie Longhorn Crew Cab 4X4
The 2013 Ram 3500 may just be the new standard for big-trucks everywhere. Better braking. A better ride. Faster speeds. Is there anything else you need from a hard-working truck?

If you need massive muscle from your truck, but don't want to sacrifice comfort and style, check out the Ram 3500. Schedule your test drive today at Doug Smith Autoplex in American Fork.

Announcement: Dodge Ram Climbs to 2013 MotorTrend Truck of the Year

The Dodge Ram is no stranger to rough-and-tough tasks, but its audience is applauding louder than ever. Restyled with new features for 2013, the Ram continues the legacy of the brand with the highest customer loyalty rates among truck drivers.

Truck owners' expectations have changed significantly in the past several years. They now look for all the luxury, features, and comfort of a sedan while maintaining the towing capability and torque of a powerful truck. Drivers now expect to have a truck they can enjoy as much for daily driving in the city as they do on the worksite, which is no easy task for automakers. But the 2013 Ram has delivered just that.

The 2013 Dodge Ram was recognized as the 2013 MotorTrend Truck of the Year.  Experts at MotorTrend were impressed to find that the 2013 Ram had something to offer everyone with "more breadth and depth than its forebears of a decade ago did." The multiple trim levels, engine options, and feature packages mean a custom driving experience.

With a V-6 powered SLT to deliver efficiency and luxury and a V-8 powered Sport to provide performance, the 2013 Ram line has the best engine options on the market. Unlike other new trucks, the 2013 Rams don't have smaller engines-but they do have more efficient ones. Ram engineers included an updated cooling system, new electric power steering, and features to lessen the load on the alternator to up the efficiency without sacrificing muscle.

The improvements on the 2013 Ram aren't just under the hood. Ram added an optional air suspension system, which is impressive for half-ton trucks. With variable loads, including up to five passengers and a full load, the air suspension puts the 2013 Ram at the top of the class. The reliable materials of the air suspension system mimic the ones used in some of the heavier luxury cars, providing one of the smoothest rides for vehicles of the Ram's size.

The 2013 Ram interior is just as impressive. The screen of the infotainment system, Uconnect, is now 8.4 inches and can serve as an in-vehicle hotspot. It is also upgradeable by downloading apps. The interior may look familiar to Ram drivers, but the materials and styling have been amped up for a fresh driving experience.

AutoTrend experts agreed unanimously that the Ram was far and away the best truck of 2013. The judges agreed that it met all the requirements of a best-in-class truck, leaving the competition scrambling to catch up. As AutoTrend Truck of the year, the 2013 Ram has reached the top of the mountain.

Announcement: J.D. Power and Associates Recognizes New Kia Sportage & Kia Soul

People may say that it is an honor just to be nominated, but Kia likes to win. And the 2013 Kia Sportage and Kia Soul weren't leaving the competition empty-handed.

The 2013 Kia Sportage and its sibling the Soul received the highest-ranked sub-compact CUV and compact multi-purpose vehicle in initial quality from J.D. Power and Associates. This comes as no surprise to Kia owners who have long applauded all the Sportage and Soul models have to offer.

2013 Kia Sportage
The Sportage has been an attractive option for drivers who want both features and style-but the 2013 model has even more to celebrate than its predecessors. The sleek exterior styling of the 2013 Sportage makes it stand out in the crowd of cookie-cutter small compact utility vehicles.

The new styling of the Sportage's grill and rims will impress design junkies. The standard features are plentiful, including 16-inch alloy wheels, cruise control, split-folding rear seats, full power accessories, Bluetooth connectivity, an auxiliary audio input jack, and iPod/USB audio interface.

Experts found the performance and handling of the Kia Sportage were more impressive than they had anticipated. With efficient engine options in the 2013 models, the Sportage's gas mileage is kept to a maximum. The 2.4-liter standard engine on the front-wheel drive models delivers an EPA-estimated 21 mpg in the city, 30 mpg on the highway. Drivers wanting a little more umph can opt for the turbocharged 2.0-liter engine that pumps out 269 lb. of torque and 260 horsepower at nearly the same miles per gallon.

The standard safety features are another reason to consider a 2013 Kia Sportage. All models include traction control, ABS systems, front-seat airbags, full-length curtain airbags and hill descent/start control.

 The Kia Soul
Perhaps the funkiest ride on the streets, the Soul appeals to drivers who value design and originality, but who still want to make the smartest choice for their money.

The angles of the Kia Soul are like nothing else on the road. It's sweptback exterior and vivid color options make this head-turning little wagon a gem among its boring competitors.

Interior styling of the 2013 Soul prove that Kia engineers know what drivers want. Houndstooth upholstery and colorful features let you know this is no ordinary car. A standard four-speaker sound system with i-pod dock and USB connectivity provide impressive sound, but true music lovers can opt for the 2013 Soul Sun and Sound package for enhanced audio features along with a panoramic sunroof.

A gas-efficient standards 1.6-liter engine delivers 138 horsepower, perfect for zipping around city streets. The available 2.0-liter engine delivers higher performance for those who desire a more exhilarating ride.

New Arrivals: The 2014 Chrysler 200 and Chrysler 300

The Chrysler brand has always been a beacon of class among domestic automakers. The sophisticated styling of the 2014 Chrysler lineup lives up to its lineage with a new line of head-turners. With more Americans returning to domestic makes, Chrysler, who offers the features and elegance of pricier luxury brands, has become a top option.

2014 Chrysler 300
The Chrysler 300 made full-size sedans fashionable again, and the 2014 version is the best yet. The 300 reminds drivers of the smooth ride and comfort of a larger sedan. Several engine options, including a feisty V6 and monster V8, make the 300 standout from the competitors.

The Chrysler 300 cabin includes all the high-tech features that the most scrupulous buyers expect; features include heated front seats, power driver seat, Bluetooth connectivity, iPod jack, central touchscreen interface, and dual-zone automatic climate control-among a slew of others.

For those who want only the best, the 300C and 300S trims have even more. Experience extra luxury with upgraded features, such as heated and cooled cupholders, heated backseat, extra chrome accents, 18-inch allow wheels, driver memory functions, and a navigation system. The Luxury Edition boasts even more for the car afficienado.

2014 Chrysler 200
The Chrysler Sebring was reinvented as a Chrysler 200 in 2011, and Chrysler designers continue to improve on the new model. More like it's stylish big brother, the Chrysler 300, the 200 provides sophistication at the greatest value to car buyers.

The mid-size sedan's interior has premium comfort and styling, often beating out its competitors. The finishes and materials of the Chrysler 200 interior have been upgraded for a greater sense of luxury, while keeping it at a reasonable price point.

Doubling the insulation in the 200 has made it one of the quietest vehicles on the road, but that doesn't mean the horses aren't galloping under the hood. Experts agree the 200's 3.6-liter Pentatstar V-6 and six-speed automatic are a refined combo. Several trims allow drivers to customize their features and engines to create their perfect ride.

For sun lovers, the Chrysler 300 convertible has returned even flashier and refined than last year. The Convertible line has its own trims to customize a sporty ride even on a smaller budget. Unlike many of its competitors, the Chrysler 200 convertible has impressive rear seat and trunk space for a convertible. Both hardtop and soft-tops are available.

Check out the 2014 Chrysler line for yourself. Schedule a test drive today at Doug Smith Autoplex in American Fork.

News: Protecting Your Pet - Subaru's Commitment to Safer Restraints

Subarus have long been a top choice for pet lovers around the world. Therefore, it was no surprise that Subaru teamed up with CPS (Center for Pet Safety) to test the true effectiveness of pet harnesses. These safety products are supposed to protect pets in the event of an accident. But recently released results from the CPS and Subaru study indicated that pet safety harnesses are not as effective as their makers have claimed.

Dog owners are beginning to understand the importance of harnessing their dogs in a vehicle. The safety of the dog is only one goal: harnessing a dog prevents them from colliding with human occupants, which could cause serious bodily injury. Dogs, if unharnessed, can also cause disruptive distractions to the driver, increasing the likelihood of an accident.

At the current time, there are no testing standards to rate the performance of pet harnesses. This allows harness manufacturers to conduct their own testing and make, at times, unsubstantiated claims to harness performance. In collaboration with Subaru, the CPS designed a crash test similar to the ones used to rate the effectiveness of child safety products. The CPS is also working to write standardized test requirements to be announced later this year.

At an independent National Highway Traffic Safety Administration testing laboratory, MGA Research, contracted by Subaru and CPS, conducted testing on several safety harnesses designed specifically to protect dogs during a vehicle impact. With the most realistic conditions possible, harnesses were tested on crash dog dummies of various weights (25 lb., 45 lb., and 75 lb.).

The CPS and Subaru sponsored tests revealed that not all the harnesses would sufficiently protect the canine in a crash, which could injure human occupants in the vehicle. One harness, the Sleepypod's clickit Utility Harness, was the clear top performer. It was the only harness that consistently prevented the dog dummy from ejecting from the crash vehicle. Because of this, it was the only one thought to sufficiently protect both the dog and vehicle occupants during an accident.

All manufacturers were invited to attend the testing sessions conducted by CPS and Subaru. The brands who were unable to send representatives were sent the results after the testing's conclusion.

With half of all Subaru drivers also being dog owners, it is important they receive this information regarding pet harnesses according to Subaru. Subaru executives hope that standardized testing requirements set forth by CPS will lead to better performing pet harnesses in the future to protect both dogs and their families.

The Kia K900: Value with a New Level of Sophistication

In an October 2013 press release, Kia announced the debut of a new model at the Los Angeles Auto Show this month. Auto industry insiders are anxious to see the brand's new flagship sedan, the K900, which will have an estimated starting price of $50,000 with the top trim reaching $70,000.

The Kia K900 will be the most expensive and lavish vehicle ever produced by the Korean automaker. The luxury sedan will come with advanced safety technologies and plush features previously used only by top-of-the-line automakers. Speed enthusiasts will appreciate the power of the rear-wheel drive K900, which is rumored to have an optional 5.0-liter, V-8 engine that delivers an impressive 420hp.

The K900 will be a far cry from the first Kia models, which were known mostly for their inexpensive price tag.  However, in recent years, Kia has proven to be more than a value-based brand by introducing some of the best-looking cars on the streets.

New Kia models have the styling, features, and sophistication that car buyers expect, turning many shoppers away from brands like Toyota and Honda. With sales of Kia outperforming many of the other mainstay sedans and SVUs, the Korean automaker has rightfully gained a place at the table with other popular brands. The K900 solidifies Kia as a maker of well appointed, reliable, and beautiful vehicles.

Kia sources report the Kia K900 will be available for sales in early 2014. For those who can't wait to see the sophisticated sedan, one will be presented on the floor of the LA Auto Show in just days.

Doug Smith Autoplex has the full-line of Kia vehicles ready for you to test-drive. See why more and more drivers have found that style and performance are possible at a sticker price that won't break the bank.
