The 2014 Jeep Cherokee Proves it is an Offroad King

The 2014 Jeep Cherokee embodies all of the contradictions of what we have come to expect in an SUV. Its styling is sleek with rounded edges, giving it a look of smooth refinement. The cabin is full of rich materials and textures typically available only on pricier models. New color schemes and trim options rival those of any luxury vehicle. It provides a comfortable and stylish ride -but it's true home is on the trail.

Don't think that the 2014 Jeep Cherokee has lost sight of what lies at the heart of an SUV, off-road performance. The Jeep Cherokee's drivetrain lineup comprises a choice of three different AWD systems. All models with 4WD have the Selec-Terrain system, with separate "smart" modes for Snow, Sport, Sand/Mud, and Rock. It promises and delivers superior off-road performance.

Any review of the 2014 Jeep Cherokee must consider both its utility as a daily driver and its off-road performance.

2014 Jeep Cherokee as an Off-road Vehicle
In the SUV world the difference between the pretenders and the true performers is how they tackle the trail. The 2014 Jeep Cherokee proves its sport credentials with outstanding off-road performance created by its advanced four-wheel drive systems.

Jeep Cherokee four-wheel drive systems
The 2014 Jeep Cherokee offers three four-wheel drive systems to help drivers customize their off-road experience including:

Active Drive I - Is a light-duty setup with a wet-clutch design and variable torque distribution between the front and rear wheels. It's handled automatically by the sensors that also govern the 2014 Jeep Cherokee's throttle and transmission and stability control, and without a low range, makes it all-wheel drive.

Active Drive
II - This system gets a low range with a crawl ratio of 56:1 with the four-cylinder. All Jeep Cherokees with four-wheel drive have Selec-Terrain, which lets drivers choose the best mode from Sport, Snow, Sand/Mud, and Rock. Sport splits torque front-to-back at 40:60 ratio; Snow reverses that ratio and starts the Jeep Cherokee in second gear for less slip; the sand and rock modes allow a rear split of up to 100 percent, and are combined with off-road braking modes. The Jeep Cherokee's rear axle will declutch when not in use, which saves fuel.

Active Lock
- This system gets Selec-Speed control, which lets the Jeep Cherokee climb hills with the same tenacity as it lowers itself with hill-descent control, creeping up from 1 mph to 5 mph in increments selected with the shift lever. Approach and departure angles are good for off-road work, at 30 and 32 degrees--and with ground clearance of 8.7 inches, the Jeep Cherokee really has very few rivals in its highly developed off-road niche.

With extensive four-wheel drive options the 2014 Jeep Cherokee delivers an off-road  performance like no other competitor in its class.
