The Kia GT4 Echos Sporty Legends of the Past

When the Kia GT4 Stinger made its debut at the Detroit auto show it was introduced as a car that pays tribute to affordable sports cars of the past.

Kia GT4 Stinger: On the Streets

The Kia GT4 Stinger comes equipped with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder under the hood, generating 315 horsepower. A close-ratio six-speed manual transmission delivers this ample power to the rear wheels. Kia sees this concept car as track-capable vehicle that can double as a sporty daily driver.

A car designed for gearheads and enthusiasts, the Kia GT4 Stinger is built on a chassis with a fully independent double-wishbone suspension that gives the Stinger excellent road-handling on the road and on the racetrack.

Kia kept the GT4 Stinger's curb weight to a low 2,874-lbs. by using carbon fiber inserts, including 20-inch custom center-lock aluminum alloys wheels, and replacing interior door handles with fabric pull straps. The Stinger's weight distribution is close to ideal with 52 percent in the front and 48 percent in the rear.

The stable platform with wheels set wider in the back than in the front has a shorter wheelbase and overall length than a compact, rides lower than a subcompact, yet is wider than large sedan.

"Driving enjoyment was the No. 1 priority in designing the GT4 Stinger," Tom Kearns, chief designer at Kia Design Center America, said. "The GT4 Stinger is a throwback to days when driving a car was a visceral experience that wasn't muted by electronic gimmickry."

GT4 Kia Stinger: On the Outside

The GT4 Stinger's distinctive styling comes with Kia's characteristic grille that is designed for maximum cold-air induction and bordered by a glowing white surround that is bookended by vertical LED headlights. The front fenders bulge to contain the 20-inch aluminum wheels.

The roofline is supported by transparent A-pillars that give the appearance that the roof is hovering above the car. Or as Kearns says makes the car look like, "it's wearing wraparound sunglasses."

The GT4 Stinger's cabin contains bucket seats that are covered in molded leather and sit above a rubber mat. Billet-aluminum pedals and a flat-bottomed steering wheel emphasize the Stinger's racing potential.

GT4 Stinger: On the Market?

Although Kia states that the GT4 Stinger will remain in the realm a concept car for now, a strong possibility exists that the Stinger could be introduced into production. With Kia's track record of putting well-received concept cars into its production lineup industry experts suspect that the GT4 Stinger could go into production in the near future.
